Drugs and Sleep

Many people think that just because they are taking legal drugs there should be no problems or side effects. However, many the legal drugs that prevent people from sleeping are every bit as dangerous and deadly as their illegal counterparts if not taken properly.

The New Drug of Choice
Ritalin, a drug often used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder is the new drug of choice for many business professionals and college students who are cramming, partying and staying up as long and as late as possible. Adderall (also originally used for ADD) is another drug of choice that is being abused by users who need that extra bit of energy.

Both Ritalin and Adderall offer users that extra edge that is needed when staying up late. In the short term students or business professionals might find it helps them focus and maintain mental clarity in order to keep up. However, they are classified as amphetamines and there is a high risk for abuse and addiction among users.

Prescription Drugs That Keep You Awake
While many people might be abusing Ritalin and Aderall there is also a percentage of people who are actually taking prescribed medication by a doctor.

If prescribed medication is keeping you awake at night then it could be impairing your ability to function during the day as well. For example, patients with dementia and heart failure are often prescribed medications that help them initially, but in the long run can hurt them since the drugs are known to keep users awake or cause them to wake up throughout the night.

Drugs Can Cause Sleep Disorders
Often people who are taking prescription drugs do not know what the ingredients include. Any time antihistamines, corticosteroids and asthma medications are prescribed you can bet on sleep problems because of how these medicines affects your nervous system.

While some drugs might be perfectly fine taken alone, when combined with other drugs or food products there is the chance for real problems in regards to nighttime sleep patterns. Who would have thought that Grapefruit juice would keep you up at night? It won't unless you combine it with Adalat, Calan, Isoptin, Plendil, Procardia or Verelan.

Cough medicine can be detrimental to your sleep too and especially when taken to treat fibromyalgia. The list goes on and it is true that often a person might just have to accept poor sleep patterns in order to stay alive. High blood pressure medication, for example or respiratory medication and antidepressants, these are all necessary medicines for many people even though there are some unpleasant side effects.

Nonprescription and Illegal Drugs
Illegal drugs also keep users up at night, often on purpose, but usually it is an annoying side effect for the takers. Illegal drugs that keep users awake include ecstasy, cocaine, anything from the amphetamine family (pink hearts, diet pills or black beauties) and even steroids.

In the case of non-prescription medication the likes of Sudafed, Anacin, Excedrin and even nicotine, sleep reduction is a sure bet because of the active ingredients. In the case of nonprescription drugs that are causing sleep deprivation the answer is simple, find another drug that works, but that doesn't keep you up all night. For those who need prescribed drugs for medical reasons – remember that sleep is important for healing so talk to your doctor about alternatives.

Your doctor might r educe your dosage while also checking the other medications you are taking. The combination of drugs could be what is causing the problem. If lack of sleep becomes severe, then certain medications might have to be eliminated or replaced with other forms of treatment. Overall, a lack of sleep can be as dangerous as any other form of deadly disease so sleep deprivation, regardless of the medication causing it, should never be acceptable.
